What Do You Learn at CNA Skill School
A CNA gives direct care to the patient in a variety of setting. They can work in a hospital, nursing home or
other medical facility. In order to work as a CNA there is a two part CNA skill test that you need to pass.
This test consists of many different areas and both parts need to be passed in order for you to become
certified to work as a CNA. Everything you are going to be tested on you are taught in CNA skill training classes. Here are a few of the many CNA skills you
will be taught.
Psychosocial Care Skills
As part of your CNA training, you are going to be taught people
skills. This CNA skill is important as you are going to be faced with many different types of people. Each
personality is different and some may be harder to deal with than others. You are going to get some patients
that may not be mentally or emotionally stable and you are going to need to know how to deal with this type of
people. You will learn how to talk and communicate with them as well and will learn how to make them feel more
at ease. Stress management is another area you are going to learn as being a Certified
Nursing Assistant can be rather frustrating and draining at times.
Physical Skills
A major part of your CNA skill training is physical skills. You are going to learn how to lift and transfer
a patient. You will learn to make a patient’s bed, keep their environment safe and comfortable and you will
also learn to assist with bathing, feeding, assisting to the bathroom, and grooming the patient. You may also
need to help with dressing as well. You will also learn how to prevent infection and how to take vital
signs.
Dealing With Certain Conditions
You may along the way end up caring for a patient that has some sort of health condition such as diabetes,
cancer, respiratory problems, and other conditions. You are going to be taught how to treat them and what
precautions are necessary if any as to keeping them safe while not spreading any infections. In some cases you
may even be required to help with rehabilitation such as range of motion exercises.
Structure
Training School for a
CNA consist of hands-on skills, clinical skills, and lab training. These skills are taught by ways of
lectures, discussions, videos and role playing. A registered nurse is usually the one in charge of teaching
these classes. Classes range in length and can take anywhere from 3 weeks to 6 months. There is a state exam
that will need to be taken in order to become licensed to work as a CNA.
CNA Skill Test
The test will get you certified to become a CNA. Each state has its requirements on what you need in order
to work in the state. There are two parts to the test and include a written portion and a clinical part. This
part of the test will test your knowledge on a few of the skills that you learned over the course of the
class.
